Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting LP is responsible for the maintenance of British Columbia’s provincial highways and roads between Radium Hot Springs (North), Goatfel (West), Alberta (East) and the U.S. border (South).

The East Kootenay Service Area encompasses 3,673 lane kilometers, which include 106 bridges (with seven being bridge-size culverts), 45 retaining walls, 4,100 culverts, four tunnels (comprising one rock tunnel and three pedestrian underpasses), 11,000 signs, and 11 rest areas.

Currently, Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting LP is offering a thrilling new career opportunity for a Labourer out of our yards in Cranbrook or Fairmont, BC. This is a six (6) month, full-time unionized opportunity, with the possibility of an extension. This is an entry-level training role designed for young adults seeking an introduction into the highway maintenance industry.

This position offers training opportunities for:

  • Class 3 License with Air Brake.
  • Seat time on loaders and other applicable equipment.
  • Highway maintenance activities. (Seasonal)

What you bring to the team:

  • Must be 18 year or older and possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license. (Willingness to be trained to upgrade to a Class 3 license with air brake)
  • Strong teamwork skills with a positive attitude.
  • Ability to work various shifts (day, afternoon, night), if required.
  • Ability to perform physical labor and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Willing to work in extreme weather conditions.
  • Strong communications and interpersonal skills.
  • Prioritizes safety in all aspects of the job, adheres to safety protocols, and promotes a safe work environment.
  • Dedication and commitment.
  • Ability to learn and an interest in advancing your skill set.

Job duties include the following:

  • Working safely with a crew and individually on the roadside.
  • Manual labour associated with highway maintenance activities which may include dust and drainage control, gravelling, grading on gravel, road base repairs, paving in numerous areas, snow removal and winter operations, etc.
  • Rest area maintenance.
  • Roadkill pick-up, patrol, Winter highway maintenance activities (seasonal) and other duties which can be completed with a Class 5 drivers’ license;
  • Traffic Control (training provided)
